A New Life for Old Friends
Annual book sale draws a crowd
By Rosanna Trestman
The books, thousands of them, underwent a long, long journey before landing in
the hands of new readers. Once again the Norfolk Library Associates, their
families, friends, and neighbors came together to create the yearly book sale to
benefit the Norfolk Library.
From the bookshelves and attics of Norfolk, books were dropped off at the
Corner Store, moved by Bob and Ben Pam and friends to Tim Hitchcock's
storage warehouse, organized flat by flat by Hatsy Taylor (book sale organizer)
and Angie Engle, then moved by Mike Sconyers, Mollie Ackerly and Schuyler
Thompson and Felix Graham-Jones in his truck, then carried by a human chain
of community volunteers into the 30 by 60 foot tent, and finally neatly placed on
the tables organized according to subject.
“Books of Better Value,” sold to dealers and discerning customers, merited a
special sales venue inside the air conditioned library. This boutique branch of the
sale was overseen by Francesca Turchiano and was a financial success. In case
you missed the sale, the remaining crème de la crème books will be inventoried
and the list again circulated among Norfolkians via the “Night-Owl.”
Outside the tent, the chief librarians spread cheer and fed the hungry with their
hotdog and soda table. Associates sold bulbs, canvas bags and playing cards
with the owl logo, and T-shirts sporting Rich Dann’s new drawing of the library.
The weather? Clear blue sky with brilliant end of summer sun.
Kevin- I’d love to work these in with photo collage or just add into story.

Buyers of all ages found books that were new to them; books that they always
meant to get to; and in some cases they were reunited with "old friends."
Volunteer Kitty Hilson had her day made when she bought a copy of “The Evil of
the Cities,” published in 1903, filled with admonitory text and drawings.
Betsy Garside so desired to reread an edition of “Pattern Design” by Louis F.
Day that she ordered a copy from an antiquarian book seller in England, only to
discover an edition of the book at the sale which was indeed the same copy that
she had checked out 20 years before!
