Semiquincentennial Committee Ends In Style

By Bob Bumcrot

August, 2008 did not mark the end of Norfolk’s big birthday celebration. On December 9 of Norfolk’s 250th year the Committee On The Semiquincentennial Celebration concluded its record of quiet, unselfish service to the town.

“Icebox” banners on Greenwoods Road make a lasting impression on Norfolk’s 250th birthday celebration.

Final figures on fund contributions and sales showed a surplus of $3994 plus $250 still outstanding for shirts sold. Committee members Ayreslea Denny and Sandy Evans, who with Beth Podhajecki co-chaired the group, moved that $3494 be transferred to the Town of Norfolk to establish a discretionary fund for townspeople in need, and that $500, plus any additional funds collected, be donated to the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department in appreciation for their support and assistance during the celebration. The motion was approved by all members: those above and Secretary Judy Ludwig, Arthur Rosenblatt, Hartley Mead and Richard Byrne. The Committee asked to be disbanded by the Board of Selectmen and concluded by stating, “It has been a real pleasure serving the Town of Norfolk during this celebration.” In addition to the recently installed “Icebox of Connecticut” banners in the center of town, memories of the parade, giant fireworks display, and a host of other activities will keep the Committee alive in the minds and hearts of many townspeople for years to come.
