Getting Ready to Slide and Sweep for the Winter Season
Curling Club holds open house and clinics

February might seem a long ways away, but the Norfolk Curling Club is already anticipating a big response to television coverage of the February Winter Olympics, which are being held in Vancouver. “We had lines outside the club during the last Olympics,” says club president, Ted Stone. “We would like to be better prepared this time around.” Stone says that once people see the game on TV they want to come and try it. “Since we are a little club, we have to try to accommodate people and we are only too delighted that they want to try the game anyway. Why not?”
With that in mind, the club has recently played host for clinics and a couple of open houses, and have garnered some new members.
This month sees the first of the club bonspiels to be held this season. The Calder Trophy, which is a men’s competition, will feature some 16 teams this year, including one Norfolk team. The rest of the teams come from all over the eastern part of the United States, and five of these teams are practicing for the Olympic play downs. “There should be some really good curling,” says Stone, who adds that the public is more than welcome to stop by the club and cheer on the teams. “The more the merrier,” says Stone.
