The Church of the Transfiguration, an Episcopal church on Mills Way, will host four Connecticut bishops this summer.
Because it is a summer church, the only one of its kind under the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, a permanent priest is not assigned to the church. Instead, the Bishop’s Committee (a group of church members) arranges for different priests to conduct services each week.
There are three presiding bishops in the state of Connecticut and they will all be at the 116 year-old church this summer, as well as a retired bishop.
Bea Tirrell, co-chairperson of the Bishop’s Committee stated, “We are very fortunate to have four bishops officiate this summer, especially our new bishop, Rev. Ian Douglas, who will be here on August 29. We are so lucky to be able to benefit from their diversity of interests.”
Prior to becoming the Bishop of Connecticut, Rev. Douglas was a professor at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts and has a special interest in global reconciliation. Bishop Curry focuses on building alliances between parishes and Hispanic and multi-cultural ministries, while Bishop Ahrens’ focus is on anti-racism, aging and life planning. Bishop Coleridge established the Bishop’s Fund for Children, which has donated more than $2.5 million to children of need in the state of Connecticut.
All residents and visitors to Norfolk are welcome at the Church of the Transfiguration. Holy Eucharist or Morning Prayers services are held every Sunday at 11 a.m. from May 30 through September 5. Norfolk’s Pete Peterson will also hold Evening Prayer services on June 15, July 14, and August 17 at 6 p.m.
