Wheels for Meals at the Farmers Market

Farmers Market Rolls Out the Wagons

Wheeling and dealing at the Farmers Market. Sue Frisch loads the fruits of autumn into one of the new Radio Flyer Trav’ler wagons available for the convenience of shoppers at the market each week.

The Norfolk Farmers Market has just started a new service to help its customers put their meals on wheels. Shoppers who suddenly find their arms too full can borrow one of two shiny red wagons to wheel around the market and back to their cars.
“One of our farmers, Bruce Zinke, suggested it,” says Sue Frisch, market committee chair. “He said he had seen them used at the Bristol market and they were very successful there. We all loved the idea and bought two to try right away. If people use them, we probably will get more.”
The wagons, brand new Radio Flyer Trav’lers, have plenty of room for good things from the market. One was recently spotted loaded with three loaves of bread, a jug of cider, two bunches of leeks, a bag of red onions, a bag of spinach, some heirloom tomatoes, two pumpkins and a bag of apples. That still left room for a couple of plants, maple syrup, eggs, a bottle of olive oil and “whatever else I need,” the shopper commented.
When shopping at the market, look for the wagons near the manager’s tent at the entrance. Anyone may borrow them to carry their shopping and to haul their prizes back to their car. Parking attendants are happy to help by returning the wagons to their station.
The Norfolk Farmers Market will continue every Saturday through October 16, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., at 19 Maple Avenue in front of Town Hall. There will be a special holiday market on Saturday, December 4, inside Battell Chapel, starting at 10 a.m., after the Fire Department’s Breakfast with Santa, and continuing until 3 p.m.
