Local Foundation Helps Area Children
Funds Available for Summer Camp Tuition

Just as there has always been a certain amount of privilege in Norfolk, there has also been a feeling that the privilege should be spread around. When Ken and Dottie Satherlie closed The Laurel School in 1985, they started a foundation dedicated to the belief that “no Norfolk child should be denied a civic, educational, social or cultural enrichment opportunity because of financial need.”
That foundation, The Norfolk Connecticut Children’s Foundation, has been quietly supporting Norfolk youths for the past twenty-five years, reports the current board president, Don Tobias. It has given countless academic scholarships, subsidies for music and dance lessons, enrollment fees for after-school programs, and grocery and gift cards at holiday time.
With summer fast approaching, Tobias wants Norfolk residents know that there is money available for summer-camp tuition assistance, including the Laverne Barbagallo Memorial Scholarship for Camp Jewell in Colebrook. “The motivating factor with the NCCF is to help Norfolk children,” says Tobias. “We intentionally have a simple application process. And though the board meets quarterly, we can and will get together to make decisions more often if needed. If someone is unsure about what we do or what we support, visit our website or just pick up the phone and call anyone on the board.”
