Colebrook Store Reopening Planned
By Robert Bumcrot
“Remember how great it was? I want to bring that back.” This handwritten note pasted on the window of the old Colebrook Store on Colebrook Road, announces the intentions of the new owner Miriam G. Briggs.
Driving through the town to visit a friend Briggs, a Colebrook native, was struck by the sad appearance of the venerable structure, which had operated continuously as a general store from 1812 to 2007. (The first store, just behind this one, opened in 1803). She became determined to return from Vermont, where she has lived for twenty years, to reopen the historic structure, the oldest of its kind in Connecticut.
According to neighbors, Briggs intends to live above the store with her two young children, and to open both a general store and a knitting shop. Another handwritten note promises an opening in July. At this time there are few signs of renovation. Further details may be expected this summer- just keep an eye on the front door.
