Bringing Townspeople Together
Community meal socials to begin in September
By David Beers
A new committee has been formed in town to provide opportunities for fellowship, conversation and a diverse culinary experience. The Norfolk Community Meal Committee had its first meeting on June 10 and voted to offer monthly potluck community meals to bring the townspeople closer together.
The idea originated with Kirk Sinclair following his walk across America as the Hiking Humanitarian. During his excursion he saw first-hand how community meals were bringing together and energizing small towns.
Representatives from several Norfolk organizations attended the first planning meeting, including Botelle School staff, Norfolk Lions Club, Norfolk Curling Club and Botelle School PTO. The members are planning to sponsor the monthly potluck suppers at the Church of Christ, with an eye on expanding it to more meals and other venues as the project evolves.
Each meal will initially have a theme and a set activity. Possible suggestions include board games, square dancing, informational presentations and curling. There will be a free-will donation box at each meal, proceeds from which will be used to cover expenses.
The first community meal is planned for September 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ. The theme of this evening will be a travelogue of Sinclair’s cross-country hike. Future meals will be held on the third Friday evening of each month. All Norfolk residents are invited to attend.
