Norfolk Artists & Friends to Stage Exhibit

Annual arts show is sponsored by the Chamber Music Festival
By Karen Linden

Twenty-three artists will show their work in the Norfolk Artists & Friends Art Show, sponsored by the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, between August 9 and 11. The Battell Stoeckel Gallery, known locally as the Art Barn, will again host painters, sculptors, a woodcut artist, photographers, jewelers and unique decorative artists.
The Norfolk Artists and Friends will donate 25% of their sales at this year’s art show to the Music Shed Restoration Project. The group will designate its contribution to be used for the replacement of the cupola, remnants of which can still be seen inside the hall. The return of the cupola will make possible an “all natural” cooling and air conditioning of the Music Shed.  The original cupola is believed to have been destroyed by lightning decades ago.
The public is invited to the gala opening reception with refreshments and music in the Battell Gallery on August 9 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Continuing through the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, the show will be an opportunity to view the art, or perhaps purchase a masterpiece, and in so doing, contribute to the Music Shed, one of America’s most important cultural monuments, at the same time.
Ellen Battell Stoeckel, with her husband Carl, founded the Norfolk Festival at the end of the 19th century. When she passed away in 1939, she left her estate in private trust with instructions that it be used for summer music and art. The great legacy of music and art continues with the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Yale Summer School of Music and Art, and is celebrated by Norfolk Artists & Friends.
