Sustainability of Small Towns Studied

The Library has received “Small Town Sustainability,” a book that picks up on many of the themes that surfaced at last month’s Norfolk 2023!, the forum on the town’s future that Norfolk Now sponsored at Infinity Hall on Oct. 6.

Its authors, Paul Knox, an architect, and Heike Mayer, an economic geographer, have been studying the question of small town sustainability for more than
two decades, both domestically and internationally.

Reviewers portray the slim 205 page volume as an engaging, lively read. The 11 chapters beginning with “Mobilizing for Change in Small Towns” and end with “What Works and What Doesn’t Work.”

The arguments most relevant to Norfolk examine creating a sustainable economy, the role of creativity and culture in sustainability, and the role of “third places” outside the home that promote conviviality and people-mixing, like the Norfolk’s Farmers Market.

A book discussion group based on “Small Town Sustainability” is forming, Anyone interested in taking part should contact Fran Turchiano at fturchiano@gmail.com.
