A New Look For Meadowbrook

Norfolk senior housing receives grant

Meadowbrook will be undergoing some physical changes this summer, thanks to a grant from the Mary R. Camp Fund. The United Church of Christ, of which the Norfolk Church of Christ is a member, provides grants under the terms of the will of Mary R. Camp for the “maintenance and operation of home(s) for elderly people which shall admit women, whether or not men are also admitted.”

The Board of Directors of Norfolk Senior Housing Corporation (NSHC) announced receipt of the generous grant this month, and plans to use it for several projects at Meadowbrook.

Lyn Patrick, secretary of NSHC, said some of the grant money will be used to resurface the entire parking area, which hasn’t been paved in many years, and to repave the rear driveway and resident entrance area. “Both are extremely important,” she says, “as in their present condition they present the possibility of falls or accidents. We will also be removing three rather dangerous trees near the parking area and the buildingĂs main entrance.”

The funds will also allow the group to offer a gentle dance class, which provides an additional opportunity for exercise and health programming for Meadowbrook residents. Women, who compose the majority of such classes, have requested more such programs. The class will be open to all Norfolk seniors, not just those who reside at Meadowbrook.

Norfolk Senior Housing Corporation (NSHC) is an affordable, non-profit residence for senior citizens. The source of income is predominantly rents, and when all of the 28 units are occupied, expenses can be met. When there are vacancies, income drops, and donations are always welcomed. This UCC grant is especially appreciated, Patrick says, as it will enable NSHC to tend to much needed work and programs.
