Farmers Market Will Continue During Winter

Use of Town Building Approved

By Wiley Wood

A popular measure to extend the Norfolk Farmers Market’s season into the winter months was passed by the Planning and Zoning Commission on September 9. Markets will be held twice a month on the second floor of the town hall from November through April. The application requesting the use of town property for the Saturday markets passed unanimously.

Speaking in favor of the market was Adair Mali, whose Lost Ruby Farm in the south part of town produces eggs and a variety of goat cheeses. Mali explained that the farm is on a nine-month production schedule and would benefit greatly from the extended season. The market’s regular season runs for six months from May to October. This year’s last outdoor market will be held on October 11.
Others who spoke in favor of the winter market were David Davis, who pointed to the enthusiasm that met the trial market last year, and Nancy McGrath, a neighbor on Maple Avenue, who said that parking had not been a problem and that commercial activity was good for the town.

The commissioners discussed whether to restrict the winter markets to food producers only. Sue Frisch, presenting the application on behalf of the Farmers Market, had testified that the vendors would be restricted to 13 in number. Asked whether the vendors would sell food only, Frisch replied, “Yes, that’s what we plan. Food is what people are looking for in winter.”

The fear that crafts vendors would draw business away from downtown stores had earlier been voiced to the commissioners. After due deliberation, the commission decided to give the organizers flexibility and not over-regulate the market, while noting that the vendors were generally expected to sell food.

The Christmas food and crafts fair, which is held in Battell Chapel during the holidays, this year on December 6, is in a separate category.

The Board of Selectmen had approved the use of the town hall for the winter markets at its August meeting, with the proviso that the market organizers take responsibility for shoveling the walkways and de-icing the entrance steps.

Norfolk’s winter markets will alternate with Litchfield’s to allow vendors and customers continuous access to markets throughout the cold months. Winter market dates are January 10 and 24, February 14 and 28, March 14 and 28, and April 11 and 25. More information is available at norfolkfarmersmarket.org.
