Wildlife Films at the Library
With spring around the corner, the Norfolk Library is showing a series of wildlife documentary films to celebrate Earth Day and the rebirth of nature. Bring your family and enjoy these critically acclaimed films on Thursday evenings. The series begins on April 2 at 7:30 with the 2014 film Bears, set against the majestic Alaskan wilderness and documenting a year in the life of a bear family; April 9 at 7:30: And Man Created Dog; April 16 at 6:30 (a special vacation time, with pizza): Chimpanzee; and April 23 at 7:30: Wings of Life, narrated by Meryl Streep. All Norfolk Library programs are free.
New Trail Running Club
Recent hints of warmer weather have gotten a lot of us feeling antsy–and eager to get outdoors and run! In light of the coming of spring, we have organized a new local trail running group: the Hill County Trail Runners Club. Our first meeting is Sunday, April 5, at 5 p.m. (probably at Wood Creek Bar and Grill). Taconic Learning Center’s New Semester Begins
The Taconic Learning Center’s spring semester begins April 6. Sample courses include “The Cold War, part 2,” “Eugene O’Neill: His Family On and Off the Stage,” “Four Puccini Operas” and “Selected Readings and Discussion of the Dialogues of Plato.” For the latest information and to register, go to taconiclearningcenter.org or call 860-364-9363. Membership is open to everyone, with an annual contribution of $60 for a full year of courses.
Winter’s Farmers Markets
There are two more indoor winter farmers markets at Town Hall, on April 11 and 25. Outdoor markets will resume May 16.
Land Trust Trail Work Session
The Norfolk Land Trusts is having a trail work session on Saturday, April 18. Gather in front of the Land Trust Office at 10 Station Place at 9 a.m. for coffee and to sign in. Work session will end around 11:30.
Crescendo Spring Concerts
The Crescendo chorus will present its spring concert in Great Barrington, Mass., on April 18, at 6 p.m., and in Lakeville, Conn., at Trinity Church Lime Rock on April 19, at 4 p.m. The program of sacred works is entitled “In That Time—in This Time: Monteverdi to Whitacre.” Crescendo founder and artistic director Christine Gevert will conduct the chorus and vocal ensemble in a cappella performances and with a basso continuo group of period instrument players from Boston and New York. Gevert will give a preconcert talk 30 minutes before each performance.
Botelle Prekindergarten Screening
Prekindergarten screening for Norfolk students will be held on Tuesday, April 21. All children born in 2011 or on January 1, 2012, are eligible for enrollment in the Botelle School prekindergarten program during the 2015–16 school year. Please contact the school office at 860-542-5286 to make sure your child is included on our list so that you will receive upcoming mailings. Appointments are necessary.
Great Mountain Forest Lecture
On Saturday, April 25, Jim Sterba will give a talk at the Norfolk Library on his book “Nature Wars: The Incredible Story of How Wildlife Comebacks Turned Backyards into Battlegrounds.” The lecture, which is sponsored by GMF, is at 4 p.m., with a reception to follow at 5. Colebrook Historical Society Meeting
On Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m., the Colebrook Historical Society will welcome Don Goetz at its 2015 annual meeting. Goetz, a direct descendant of Colebrook Store builder William Swift, will share the fascinating history of the days when two general stores operated on opposite corners of the Colebrook green. The meeting will be held in the Colebrook Town Hall meeting room, at the corner of Routes 183 and 182A. Refreshments will be served. Rabies Clinic
The annual town rabies clinic will be held at the Norfolk Fire Department on May 2 from 10 a.m. to noon, for a fee of $20. Cats must be in cages and dogs on leashes. Innoculations will be administered by Kim Maynard, DVM, from the Litchfield Hills Mobile Veterinary Clinic. For more information, contact Animal Control Officer Glen Wheeler at 860-542-6978.
Library Auction Gala Scheduled
Save the date! On Saturday, September 26, The Norfolk Library Associates will host their 2015 Auction Gala. Items so far include getaways to Costa Rica, the Bahamas, Pinehurst, N.C., and Sanibel. Look for more auction items in the Library Night Owls email newsletter and the Owl print newsletter. Proceeds from the auction help fund the many free events at the library, from documentary films to children’s programs.
