Quilt-in at Church of Christ

Rabies Clinic

May 2, 10 a.m.-noon. Norfolk’s Animal Control Officer Glen Wheeler has arranged the annual rabies clinic. Local veterinarian Kim Maynard will administer the inoculations at the Norfolk Fire Department headquarters on Shepard Road. Fee: $20 per animal. Dogs must be on leashes and cats in cages.

Running Clinic

May 4, 11 and 18, 5:30-7 p.m. Hill Country Trail Runners Club sponsors a running technique clinic at the Botelle tennis courts.  Fee: $45. Email properrunningform@gmail.com to register.

Budget Votes and Other Town Business

May 5, noon-8 p.m., budget referendum on the Regional School District 7 budget, Town Hall.  May 11, 7 p.m., annual Town Meeting, Town Hall.

May 20 and 21, 7 p.m., at the Colebrook School and Botelle School, respectively. Public information sessions for the Norfolk-Colebrook Study Group to receive input on the regionalization plan before it takes its final form. Copies of the draft plan will be available at the Norfolk and Colebrook town halls, on the town websites and on the two school websites.

Spaghetti Supper for Botelle Community Garden

May 8, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Spaghetti supper benefits the Botelle Community Garden at the Botelle School cafeteria. $7 adults, $5 children with a family package deal of $25. Take a chance on some fun raffle prizes and stop by the Scholastic book fair in the Hall of Flags.

Graphoanalyst at Klauer Hall

May 11, 7 p.m. The Immaculate Conception Church Women’s Club sponsors a presentation by graphoanalyst David DeWitt, who will speak about his recent book, “Handwriting Analysis: Discover Your Vocation Career Potential.” All are invited. May 2, May 16 and May 30, 1 p.m. Kim Maxwell leads “The Unbearable Heaviness of Something Small,” a seminar on small events that turn into something much larger. Discussion of “King Lear” on May 2, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass” on May 16, and Oscar Wilde’s “Salome” on May 30.

May 15, 10:30 a.m. Norfolk Library Book Group with Mark Scarbrough. Discussion of William Faulkner’s “Go Down Moses.”

May 17, 4 p.m.  Design historian Dianne Pierce will give a lecture about Russel Wright, an important mid-twentieth century designer. Wright’s designs, including the enormously successful “American Modern” dinnerware, brought Americans into the modern era and changed their ways of living. A field trip to Manitoga, Wright’s fascinating home in Garrison, NY, is planned for June 11.

May 24, 4 p.m.  author Janice Nimura will speak about her book, “Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back,” the extraordinary story of five samurai girls who were sent by the Japanese government to the United States in 1871 to learn Western ways and return to nurture a new generation of enlightened men to lead Japan. Both Norfolk and Colebrook make cameo appearances in the narrative.

Events at Great Mountain Forest

Canoe Raffle. GMF is selling raffle tickets for a 1950’s canoe made by the Chestnut Canoe Co. It is a 16-foot Ogilvy model, made specifically for flyfishing. Tickets are $20 apiece; only 500 will be sold. The raffle drawing will be held on June 6.

May 8, 6 p.m. “Painting With Light,” a night-time photography workshop. Bring your camera, tripod and remote release (if possible). Suggested donation $15.

May 30, 3 p.m. Lecture by Robert Marra: “CAT Scans for Trees, The Role of Forests in Combatting Climate Change.”  Free and open to the public.

May 31, 8 a.m. Bird walk and discussion led by Jody Bronson and Michael Corcoran, “Songbirds and the Working Forest.” Suggested donation $10.

37th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Road Race

May 25, 9 a.m. Memorial Day parade steps off from Town Hall. Immediately after the parade, the annual Open House at the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department will commence, with coffee, juice, and doughnuts.

10 – 11:30 a.m. Road Race registration at the ball park on Mountain Road. From 11:30 through the race finish, the Fire Department will offer hamburgers/hotdogs/beverages for sale on Town Green.

12 noon.  Race starts, followed by the award presentation at approximately 2 p.m.
