Curriculum Night

There will be a curriculum celebration at Botelle School on Tuesday, June 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The evening will feature displays throughout the school of student work, and some demonstrations of how students have used technology to advance their learning.

 

Freedom of Information Workshop

Tom Hennick, of Connecticut’s Freedom of Information Commission, will be at town hall on Tuesday, June 2 at 7 p.m. to discuss state regulations regarding access to public documents. GMF Field Day and Canoe Raffle

Great Mountain Forest will host a field day at the Childs Center beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 6. Participants will enjoy a guided hike, camp fire cooking, wildlife displays, fly-tying and casting lessons and more. The annual canoe raffle drawing will be held at 2 p.m. Bring a picnic lunch.

 

Parks and Forest Trails Day Hike

Norfolk Land Trust board member Shelley Harms will lead a hike focused on native plants and birds at Campbell Falls State Park on Saturday, June 6 at 11 a.m. The event is part of the Connecticut Parks and Forest Trails Day. Historical Society’s New Exhibition

The 2015 exhibition at the Norfolk Historical Museum, “A Farmer, a Sportsman and a Diplomat: the Romance of Collecting,” opens on Saturday, June 6 at 1 p.m. It features the collections of three Norfolk residents: Austin Wooster who collected Conn. shelf clocks; Frederick K. Barbour, noted collector of 18th and 19th century Conn. furniture; and Frank J. Goodnow, Constitutional advisor to the Republic of China, who collected Chinese pien mien fans. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and by appointment.

 

First Annual Malt, Hops & Grapes Tasting

Church of Christ is hosting a craft beer, fine wine and single malt Scotch whiskey tasting on Saturday, June 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Battell Chapel. There will be live music, hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages as well. Andrew Thomson will lead a “tasting tour” of the single malts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $20 from church members or through the church office, 860-542-5721. Tickets purchased at the door will be $25. All proceeds will benefit the community work of the Norfolk Church of Christ. Proof of age 21 or older required to taste. Those under 21 are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

 

Plant Exchange

The Norfolk Conservation Commission is once again offering a free native plant to Norfolk residents who take out an invasive ornamental such as winged euonymus, autumn olive, Russian olive, Japanese honeysuckle, Japanese barberry and buckthorn. Bring proof of removal to the Farmers Market on Saturday, June 13, and pick out a lovely native shrub to replace it. Each participant is limited to one plant, first come first served while supplies last.

 

Norfolk Artists & Friends Open Studio Tour

The Norfolk studios of Anita Holmes, John Thew, Nina Mascetti Ritson, Ronald Sloan, Ruthann Olsson and Tom Hlas will be open to the public on Saturday, June 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.norfolkart.org for details.

 

Author Tim Parrish at the Norfolk Library

Award-winning author Tim Parrish will be at the Norfolk Library on Saturday, June 13 at 4 p.m. for a reading and discussion from his book, “Fear and What Follows: The Violent Education of a Christian Racist, a Memoir.” An unflinching account of the author’s spiral into racist violence during the latter years of desegregation in 1960’s and 1970’s Baton Rouge, the book explores the complex roots of southern, urban, working-class racism and white flight, while telling a story of family, love and the possibility of redemption.

 

Music Festival Open House

The Music Festival will be hosting an open house on Sunday, June 21. There will be a children’s concert at 2 p.m., children’s games and an ice cream social at 3 p.m. and a concert by the Allant Trio at 4 p.m. There will also be tours of Whitehouse from 1:30 to 3 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

 

Golf Outing

The men’s club of Immaculate Conception Church hosts its annual golf outing on Wednesday, June 24 at Quarry View Golf Course in East Canaan. 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. $95 fee includes greens fee, golf cart, on-the-course refreshments and dinner afterwards at Geer Village. Garden Tour & Steak Dinner

A fundraiser to benefit the Curling Club will be held on Saturday, June 27. The garden tours will take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and a steak dinner and silent auction will be held at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25-$45. Contact gardentour@norfolkcurlingclub.org for more information.

 

Colebrook Historical Society Exhibition

On Sunday, June 28 from 3 to 5 p.m., the Colebrook Historical Society will debut its summer 2015 exhibition, “Open for Business,” celebrating the history of the general stores that operated in Colebrook. The Colebrook Historical Society is located on the corner of Routes 183 and 182A. Turi Rostad Exhibit at the Norfolk Library

“Turi Rostad: Recalculating” will open at the Norfolk Library on Sunday, June 28 with a reception for the artist from 4 to 6 p.m. Rostad is a contemporary artist whose work is punctuated by her vibrant spirit and originality of vision. Her art is optimistic, her colors lush and lively. Energetic, spontaneous form infuses her canvases and drawings.

 

Group Show at Infinity

“Love and Beauty”, a group show curated by Jon Riedeman, will hang in the Infinity Hall gallery until July 5. The show includes work by Madeline Falk, Ann Getsinger, Katherine Griswold, Christine Hanley, Michaela Allen Murphy, Jon Riedeman and Nina Mascetti Ritson.
