Trail racing takes runners through fields and forests.

Barbour Woods will be alive with trail runners on Sunday, Sept. 27 at noon, when the Norfolk Land Trust hosts its second annual 5K Trail Race, a USATF-sanctioned event. The Barbour Woods trails feature a mixture of single and double track with an ascent up Beech Hill for a view of Haystack Mountain and a run by historic Killarney Bridge.

Registration is $10, and $15 on race day. Online registration is available at bit.ly/NLTtrailrace2015 or is downloadable at www.greystoneracing.net.

Awards will be given to the top three males and females overall and the first male and female in each age division (youth, 19 and under; open, 20-39; masters, 40-49; grand masters, 50 and over).

The event will feature a post-race awards ceremony at Infinity Hall Bistro with a bowl of chili and a Big Elm Brewing beer glass for all runners. Big Elm of Sheffield, Mass will also host a “tap takeover” at the bistro for the event.

Directions: Route 44 to the Center of Norfolk, at the Green, head north on Maple Ave. At the 4-way stop continue north onto Lovers Lane. Parking, registration, the start and finish are all at the Land Trust’s Lovers Lane entrance to Barbour Woods, at the foot of the hill (address for GPS: 75 Lovers Lane, Norfolk CT 06058).
