Norfolk Youths Work in Boston Soup Kitchen
Young volunteers from the Church of Christ in Norfolk worked in the Jamaica Plains neighborhood of Boston in early July packaging containers of soup for meals to be delivered to people with life-threatening illnesses. On this particular day, the crew helped assemble some 270 meals—double the usual amount done in the same span of time, according to one of the staff at the agency, Community Servings. Shown in the photo are, clockwise from lower left, Ellie Olsen, Luke Green, Elias Olsen, Reg Denny, Jake Green and Alex Machowski. The group, which was 23 strong and stayed the week at a church in Quincy, Mass., also served at two soup kitchens, a street arts outreach program, an urban farm and a local church. One night they hosted dinner for two formerly homeless men who shared their stories and illuminated many issues connected to homelessness. The service projects were coordinated through the Boston Urban Outreach program of the City Mission Society.
