Sanders and Trump Win Norfolk Primaries
Election officials in Norfolk reported a steady trickle of primary election voters throughout the day, with two Democrats, on average, for every Republican. Turnout was high, with 62 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.
On the Democratic side, the count was 141 votes for Bernie Sanders, and 129 for Hillary Clinton. Sanders’s share of Democratic votes was 52 percent.
The Republican ballot had four candidates. Donald Trump led with 73 votes or 57 percent. He was trailed by John Kasich, with 36 votes (28 percent); and Ted Cruz, with 18 (14 percent). Ben Carson received 2 absentee votes.
The question addressed most often to election officials was: “Who is Roque de la Fuente?” The name appeared on the Democratic ballot, above Clinton’s and Sanders’s. Roque de la Fuente received zero votes in Norfolk.
