New Owners of Brotherhood Property Sue Norfolk Over Taxes

The Confucian Study Association, owner of the former Deerspring Bruderhof compound on West Side Road, is suing the Town of Norfolk in Litchfield Superior Court for exemption from property taxes.

The organization, formed in January of this year, took ownership of the 48-acre parcel in March and applied to the town for tax exemption. Assessor Michele Sloane denied the request. The property is valued at more than $9 million.

The Confucian Study Association appealed to the Board of Assessment Appeals in April and was denied again.

In May, the association was awarded nonprofit status by the Internal Revenue Service, exempting it from federal taxes. The suit against the Town of Norfolk was filed on June 13 and will be heard on July 26.
