Pie Sale
Homemade pies will be on sale at the farmers market on Saturday, September 3. The sweet and savory whole pies will cost $15 each, and proceeds will benefit the Church of Christ Congregational on the village green.
Award-winning storyteller Bill Torrey at Norfolk Library
Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 4,, at 5 p.m. when logger turned writer/storyteller Bill Torrey comes to the Norfolk Library. Bill is a sixth-generation Vermonter who spent most of his life working alone in the woods. In 2013, he retired from logging and began work as a writer and oral storyteller. He has won four Moth StorySLAMS and three Extempo competitions. This program is free and cosponsored by Great Mountain Forest. Reserve your seat by calling the library at 860-542-5075.
Travels in the Arctic
On Friday, September 9, at 7 p.m., the Colebrook Historical Society will host a presentation by the Very Reverend Roger E. Briggs, who served as an Anglican minister in northern Canada for more than 50 years. He will talk about his experiences living and working with the people of the Arctic. The gathering, with refreshments, will be at the Seymour Inn, at the intersection of Routes 182A and 183 in the center of Colebrook. Democrats Sponsors Meet-the-Candidates Picnic
The Norfolk Democratic Town Committee will host a meet-the-candidates picnic on Saturday, September 10, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Norfolk Curling Club, 70 Golf Drive. The event is held in conjunction with the North Canaan and Colebook town committees. Tickets are $15 and $10 for seniors and children. Tickets may be purchased beforehand from town committee members, or at the door. The menu will feature chicken and assorted salads. Candidates for local, state and federal office are expected to attend.
Concert at Battell Chapel
On Saturday, September 10, at 5 p.m., there will be a concert at Battell Chapel featuring songs from Italy, Spain and the Americas. The performers are soprano Jordan Rose Lee and Alturas Duo, with Scott Hill on guitar and Carlos Boltes on viola and charango. There is a $10 suggested donation.
Independent Film Series at the Library
The Norfolk Independent Film Series will present three independent films followed by discussion with the filmmakers this fall, beginning on September 16 at 7:30 p.m. with “Bob and the Trees,” a film by Diego Ongaro. Shot on location in the Berkshires during one of the coldest winters, the film is an artful mix of documentary and narrative. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and has been screened at more than 20 international film festivals. This program is free, but reservations are suggested; call 860-542-5075.
Little Guild of St. Francis Fundraiser
To avoid conflicts with other Norfolk events, the Little Guild of St. Francis moved their fundraiser at Husky Meadows Farm, originally scheduled for July, to Saturday, September 24, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event, which will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and an auction, will allow Norfolk residents to get more involved in supporting the shelter. Open Mike by Artists, Writers and Filmmakers
As part of a three-day retreat for artists, writers, filmmakers and musicians, organized by Courtney Maum, there will be an open mike at the library on Sunday, September 25, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Editor, novelist and retreat participant Ann Shearn will give a talk entitled “The Pleasure and Pain of Long-Term Projects,” and other participants in the retreat will give five-minute readings.
Well-Being Classes
Classes at the Church of Christ Congregational are restarting for the fall in the chapel. Yoga is on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. with Heather Coon; dance fitness on Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m. with Kristin Mudge; and Zumba on Saturdays at 9 a.m. with Chris Royer.
