Farmers Market Continues Into October
The Norfolk Farmers Market continues its outdoor season through October 8. Local meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, artisan wares, knife sharpening. Town Hall lawn, 19 Maple Ave., Norfolk.
“Norfolk Through a Lens” at the Norfolk Library
The library’s October exhibition presents the work of ten Norfolk photographers, coinciding with the publication of their book, “Norfolk Through a Lens.” Offering a broad and colorful picture of life in our town, the book features text by Anita Holmes and photographs by Jennifer Almquist, Peter Coffeen, Mahlon F. Craft, Bruce Frisch, Katherine Griswold, Anita Holmes, James Jasper, Christopher Little, Babs Perkins and Rick Schatzberg. The exhibition opens Sunday, October 2, from 4 to 6 pm, and runs through November 2. Books will be available for order at the opening.
Day Trip to New York
The Colebrook Senior and Community Center offers a day trip to New York City on Wednesday, Oct. 26, leaving Colebrook Center at 7:30 a.m. and returning from New York at 6:00 p.m. The cost, covering transportation only, is $40 per person. There are stops at Rockefeller Center, the Metropolitan Museum and Ground Zero/Ellis Island. Norfolk Library: Textile Talk with Scarves
“Most of us take clothes too seriously. They are a form of self-expression, so let’s have some fun!” Fashion and costume designer Linda Wayne has worked in film, television, dance, and cabaret, designing for the likes of Ingrid Bergman, Sophia Loren, Robin Williams, Ali McGraw and many more. After reviewing the history of textile use, Linda will demonstrate the many ways people can wrap themselves in a beautiful fabric, adding fashion tips along the way. She will bring scarves and jewelry from her online shop, the Linda Wayne Collection. Sunday, October 9, at 4 p.m.
Hunter’s Moon Walk
Join the Norfolk Land Trust for a special evening hike at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 to the Dennis Hill Gazebo. Board member Hartley Mead will lead the hike and give a brief talk on what is visible in the night sky at this time of year. Please gather outside the gate to Dennis Hill State Park off Route 272 South. Bring headlamps and wear appropriate attire. The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 16.
The Norfolk Independent Film Series
“Men Go to Battle” will be screened at the Norfolk Library on Saturday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m. This film is the story of two brothers struggling to hold their crumbling estate together outside a small Kentucky town in the fall of 1861 before the war encroaches, leaving each man on his own. Introduced by director and writer Zachary Treitz.
Writers in Conversation with Courtney Maum
Local author Courtney Maum’s new “Writers in Conversation” series at the Norfolk Library kicks off October 22 with a panel discussion “How to Pick a Winner: Ethics and Instincts in Literary Gatekeeping.” Benjamin Samuel from the National Book Award Foundation will be on hand to discuss the 2016 finalists (which will have just been announced), and Halimah Marcus, executive director of the independent publishing enterprise Electric Literature, will share what it’s like deciding who (and what) makes it onto the printed page. Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11:00 a.m.
Norfolk Library Concerts: Homage to Robert Schumann
On this 160th anniversary of the composer’s death, Natasha Ulyanovsky, pianist, Peter Dzialo, cellist, and Dr. Monika Krajewski, mezzo-soprano, will perform music by Robert Schumann (1810-1856), including the vocal cycle “Frauenliebe und –leben,” and duets for cello and piano. Sunday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. The concert is free, but reservations are requested. Call the library at 860-542-5075.
Library Talk on Architect Henry A. Sykes
David Hosford will give a talk on Henry Alexander Sykes (1810-1860), an important mid-19th century New England architect, who designed among other buildings the iconic Greek Revival meeting house on the green in New Marlborough in 1837. A professor emeritus at Rutgers University, Hosford was a member of the history department on the Newark campus for almost forty years. Sunday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m.
