Listen Up Norfolk Students! Scholarship Funds Available
The Greenwoods Scholarship Foundation, a non-profit organization, would like it to be known that there is money available for scholarships. The Foundation, based in Winsted, was incorporated in January of 1975 and has among its stated goals a desire “to provide the most beneficial distribution of funds to the greatest number of deserving students.” The money for the scholarships comes from permanent memorial funds, donors and much of it is also raised in an annual fund drive. The Foundation strives to award a scholarship of at least $500 but sometimes the amount can be $1000.
Who is eligible for these grants? Residents of Norfolk who are seniors graduating from Regional 7, Gilbert, or the Oliver Wolcott Technical schools can apply, as well as students at Northwestern Connecticut Community College and Norfolk residents who are currently attending college.
“We realize that college expenses have continued to rise and that many students cannot attend college without financial aid,” says Rosemary Farnsworth, Norfolk director of the Foundation. Farnsworth says that there have been times when money has had to be returned because no suitable candidate applied. Because of this, Farnsworth urges students to apply for these scholarships since “some scholarships may only be given to residents of Norfolk.”
Students can obtain applications from their high school guidance counselors. The forms may also be downloaded from the Greenwoods Scholarship Foundation website, gsfct.org. Note that the deadline for submitting the applications is February 17, 2007.
