Community Celebrates the Thews’ 80th Birthday

It is extraordinary when someone in our community celebrates their 80th birthday, but when John and Eve Thew of Ashpohtag Road both turned 80, on March 12 and March 14, that was cause for huge celebration. They were absolutely surprised by a party given to them by their friends and family at the Church of Christ in the Battell Chapel on Sunday, March 11, 2007. Wearing pale pink corsages and huge smiles, the Thews greeted around 135 guests, including some who traveled long distances to be part of the festivities. The Church of Christ chapel was fragrant with fresh flowers as guests to the reception enjoyed a hearty brunch prepared by members of the church, friends and family. Front and center on a display table was a poster of photos and news clippings heralding the art and business of John and Eve Thew that spanned many decades. Illuminated by the stained glass window was a photorealistic painting by Harry Rallo of John in his workshop. This painting is currently on display at the National Iron Bank. Turning 80 is certainly a milestone but for the Thews, who run circles around most forty-year olds, eighty is young.
