Weekend in Norfolk Starts August 4

Events at this year’s second annual WIN weekend include music, hikes, art at the Art Barn and the library, tours of some of Norfolk’s historic houses and churches. The farmers market is hosting a special kids’ day, and there will be additional activities for kids and families on the village green and at Botelle School. Homemade Pie Sale

There will be a pie sale—both sweet and savory, all made by local bakers—at the farmers market on Saturday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies run out. Proceeds will benefit the Church of Christ Congregational.

Kids’ Marbling Workshop

Great Mountain Forest is holding a Suminigashi (Japanese marbling) workshop for children ages 10-12 on Saturday, August 12, from 9:30 to noon. The workshop, taught by Christina DiMarco, is free, but donations are accepted. For more information, go to greatmountainforest.org.

Workshop on the Night Sky

The Colebrook Historical Society will host a workshop on the night sky on Saturday, August 12, when the Perseid meteor shower will be at its height. Participants should bring binoculars, ground cover, blankets and cell phones. Telescopes will be available. All are welcome to meet at the Rock School, at the intersection of Route 183 and Sandy Brook Road, at 9 p.m. For further information contact Carol Lord at 860-738-8244 or Carol.9508@yahoo.com.

Eric Foner at the Colebrook Historical Society

On Friday, August 18, at 7 p.m., the Colebrook Historical Society will host a social gathering featuring refreshments and conversation with Professor Eric Foner, who will present his recent book Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad. The Cabins Presentation

Local novelist Courtney Maum’s collaborative retreat “The Cabins” returns to Norfolk this year with a vibrant group of writers, filmmakers, artists and musicians who will be working together by Tobey Pond for four days in August. Join them at the library on Sunday, August 13, at 2 p.m. as they present excerpts of their individual work. A filmmaker who worked on “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and an opera singer are among the talented participants.

Wet Meadow Workday

On Saturday, August 19, from 8 to 10 a.m., the Norfolk Conservation Commission will hold a workday in the Botelle School wet meadow. Participants will learn about uncommon wetland plants and invasive species, and how to manage this unique habitat. Meet at the Botelle School parking lot near the tennis courts. Rosemary Gill Reading at the Library

Rosemary Gill will be reading from her 2017 memoir The Owl House at the Norfolk Library on Monday, August 21, at 5 p.m., followed by a book signing. The Owl House, named after a large figure of an owl resting on the roof, is a Victorian mansion in Bronxville, N.Y., that was the home of the late author Brendan Gill and his family.

Norfolk Library Book Sale

The 41st annual book sale will take place the weekend of August 26-27, Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Browse through over 10,000 books donated from Norfolk’s private libraries, 75 percent of them hardcover. Proceeds benefit the Norfolk Library Associates and support the library’s many free special events, documentary films, concerts, book discussions and children’s programs.
