Joseph Carrere Fox, 1916-2017
Joseph Carrere Fox, originally of New York City, died on August 10 in Hamden, Conn. at the age of 101. A graduate of Andover and Yale (’38), Joe served with the Office of Naval Intelligence during WW II, monitoring the Panama Canal and the Straits of Gibraltar. He then returned to New York City, where he earned an M.B.A. from New York University. An unusual combination of the serious and the playful, Joe worked diligently for many years as an international investment banker with both Banker’s Trust and Kidder, Peabody & Co. Upon his retirement, Joe made a thorough two-year study of possible projects before he decided to found a student exchange program, which became the Fox International Fellowship (FIF), a partnership between Yale University and 19 leading universities around the world. Joe was predeceased by his first wife, Louise Lee, and is survived by his wife, Alison Barbour, and his children: Dell Fox, Lee Fox (Peter White), Henry Fox (Libby Delana); his stepdaughters: Vicky Maclean and Frederica Sulzbacher (Steve); and his nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is survived also by his brother, Alan Fox (Cheryl). Joe’s passions were family and friends, languages, tennis and Mt. Desert Island. Few things gave him more pleasure than jumping into the cold, cold water every day before breakfast when up in Maine, or literally running on a treadmill when he was well over ninety. Alert until the end, he was an inspiration to many for his fortitude, curiosity and zest for life. Donations may be sent to FIF, c/o George Joseph, MacMillan Center, P.O. Box 208206, New Haven CT 06520; or to Whitney Center, Health Center, 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden CT 06517. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. at the Battell Chapel, New Haven CT.
