A Week of Work and Camaraderie

The three youngsters above (from left to right, Ellie Olsen, Luke Green and Ethan Perlman) were pictured on a recent work camp trip to Camden N.Y. organized by Norfolk’s First Congregational Church. For the fourth year in a row, a group of about 30 volunteers spent a week doing house repairs and house improvements in the upstate New York community. Pastor Erick Olsen explains that the mission trips provide a unique chance for people to live their beliefs. “We essentially begin the week as relative strangers,” he says. “Some of our participants hardly know each other before we leave town, and almost all of us have never met our Camden partners. Within a few days, we are like a family. This year, as we were finishing work on the second day at one of our sites, the host pulled me into a hug and said, ‘I can’t say enough how much we appreciate what you guys are doing. We’re friends for life. For life.’ That is a sacred moment.”
