Republicans and Democrats Vote in Primary Elections

Norfolk voters went to the polls on August 14 to decide on the slate of candidates for their respective parties ahead of the November elections. A total of 285 ballots were cast. Both local parties were pleased with the turnout for a primary, with 191 Democratic voters and 94 Republicans—in each case a little less than half of the registered party voters.

For the Democrats, Norfolk voting patterns matched those of the state at large, with Ned Lamont winning by a large margin over Joe Ganim for governor. Susan Bysiewicz won for lieutenant governor, and William Tong for attorney general. Chris Murphy was running unopposed for U.S. senator, and newcomer Jahanna Hayes was victorious over Mary Glassman, former first selectman for Simsbury, in the race for the Fifth Congressional District seat.

On the Republican side, Norfolk voters were fairly evenly split among the five candidates for governor, but they preferred Tim Herbst to the statewide winner Bob Stefanowski. Otherwise, they tracked along with the rest of the state: Joe Markley for lieutenant governor, Sue Hatfield for attorney general, Matthew Corey for U.S. Senate and Manny Santos for U.S. House of Representatives.
