Margot Trout Landscape Paintings

Please join us at the opening reception for the artist Margot Trout on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m., graciously hosted by the Library Associates. Margot has taught at the Maine College of Art and Mount Holyoke College, and her work has been exhibited widely in Maine, Massachusetts and New York.

 

Taylor Mali’s Metaphor Dice

Backgammon, Boggle, board games, casinos … all depend on a roll of the dice. On Saturday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. at the Norfolk Library, Brooklyn-based poet, educator, spoken word and voiceover artist Taylor Mali will demonstrate an entirely novel use of dice as a way to explore metaphors through random words. Taylor is one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement and one of the original poets to appear on the HBO series “Def Poetry Jam.” Please register by calling the Library at 860-542-5075. Performance and Songwriting Workshop

Southern music legend Ed Snodderly will perform at the Norfolk Library on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. His name is synonymous with the best Southern music and culture. If you saw the movie Oh, Brother Where Art Thou? you saw Ed as the village idiot whose fiddling took center stage. If you visited Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, you read Ed’s song lyrics inscribed into the wall. Ed will also offer a songwriting workshop (free; pre-registration required) from 12 to 3 p.m. Please call the Library 860-542-5075 to reserve a seat for these free events.

 

Classic Holiday Film at the Norfolk Library

On Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., the Norfolk Library classic film series presents Holiday Inn (1942), with music by Irving Berlin, dancing by Fred Astaire, and Bing Crosby singing “White Christmas” and “Easter Parade.”

 

Carol Sing at the Library

The annual carol sing at the Library will take place on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served, followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree on the village green and a visit by Santa Claus in his fire engine.

 

Norfolk Land Trust Sponsors a Post-Thanksgiving Walk

Resist the lure of the big box stores and enjoy a walk in nature at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, with the Norfolk Land Trust. Meet outside the Pine Mountain trailhead off Grantville Road for the hike. Please wear waterproof shoes because portions of the trail can be wet. The hike should last about two hours. In the event of inclement weather, the walk will be cancelled.

 

A Celebration of Connecticut’s Local Museums

Illustrated talk by William Hosley, Thursday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. at the Norfolk Library, followed by a reception at the Norfolk Historical Museum. Connecticut has 169 towns and as many community-based historical museums. Most are small. Many are run by volunteers. No two are alike. They preserve and present great local stuff and stories. They collect. They offer public programs.. They advocate for preservation. They serve schools and greet tourists. They are a civic miracle. This is their story and why they matter.

Fourth Annual Cake Auction

The Norfolk Historical Society will hold its annual cake auction on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $25 at the door. All are welcome. Please visit our website www.norfolkhistoricalsociety.org for more details.
