A Quick Preview of the Midterm Election

The midterm elections on Nov. 6 will see the election of a new governor in Connecticut, as Dannell P. Malloy leaves after eight years in office.

Also in contention are Christopher Murphy’s United States Senate seat and the Fifth Congressional District seat currently held by Elizabeth Esty, who has chosen to step down in the wake of an #MeToo scandal.

On the local level, Norfolk voters will cast ballots in races for District 8 of the Connecticut State Senate and District 64 of the State House of Representatives.

Two ballot initiatives will also be decided in the election. The first is known as the “transportation lockbox.” It would give constitutional protection to the Special Transportation Fund, ensuring that the money in the fund is used exclusively for transportation purposes.

The second would prevent the General Assembly from selling state-owned property without a public hearing and specific legislation that authorizes the sale.

Both are proposed as amendments to the Connecticut State Constitution and have been passed by the General Assembly. If a majority of the electors approve them, they will become part of the constitution.
