A Concert Presentation of Handel’s The Messiah

On Saturday, December 8 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, December 9 at 3 p.m., the church choirs of the Church of Christ, Norfolk and the Congregational Church of Salisbury will collaborate to present the Christmas portion of The Messiah. The concerts are free of charge, but free-will donations are always welcome at the door.

 

Jon Riedeman: Birds of Prey

The work of sculptor Jon Riedeman will be on display at the Norfolk Library through the month of December. Jon has been making art for three decades, the last two in Norfolk. He has been Sculptor-in-Residence at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, New Hampshire, and has won several awards including a MacDowell fellowship and a Connecticut Commission on the Arts fellowship.  Please join us for the opening reception for the artist on Sunday, December 2, from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by the Library Associates.

 

Holiday Open House in Colebrook

The Colebrook Historical Society invites you to their annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. Highlighting the event will be a silent auction of Christmas treasures.  Miniature trees, ornaments, wreaths, and tabletop décor will be on display.  Place the winning bid and you’ll be able to take your treasure home. Come enjoy readings of the season, a Christmas carol sing-along and refreshments. At 5 p.m, the event will move outside to the village green for the lighting of the town center trees. Attendees are asked to bring a donation of a non-perishable food item to share with those less fortunate. Documentary Film at the Norfolk Library

On Thursday, December 13, at 7 p.m., the Norfolk Library Film Series presents Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, the documentary about Fred Rogers’ signature TV show, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” and the man behind it. Perfect for the holidays, it is a funny, touching, and vital film, which is both timely and timeless. Come early (6:30 p.m.) for refreshments!

 

Save The Date for Winter WIN

Save the dates for the second annual Winter Weekend in Norfolk festival! The end of February will be here before we know it, and groups all over town are coming up with events for February 23 and 24, the weekend after President’s Day. There will be lots of fun things to do, both indoors and out, so plan on being in town that weekend! See weekendinnorfolk.org for details; new events will be posted early in January.

Norfolk Children’s Film Festival at the Library

During vacation week, two prize-winning series of short films will be shown at the Norfolk Library. On Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 3:30 p.m., children of all ages are invited to watch “Dig Deep, Fly High”, Prizewinning and Audience Favorite Animated Films for Children’s Film Festival Seattle 2018. Dive into exciting adventures, vibrant colors and exquisite storytelling with this timeless collection of 11 animated films from nine countries. Chase a kite into a mysterious cave, discover how to light up a dark forest, fill up a marvelous hole in the ground, soar with a flock of birds, discover the way to wake up a whole town, swim with a magnificent Orca, and discover all the things that make you special!

On Saturday, Dec. 29, at 4 p.m. the library will show “Dream Catchers”, Prizewinning and Audience Favorite Live Action Films from Children’s Film Festival Seattle 2018, for children ages 8 and up. Who says being a kid is easy? The young people in these films must overcome all kinds of challenges, big and small, to follow their dreams.

 

Norfolk’s First Makerspace

Makerspaces, sometimes referred to as hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fablabs are creative, These are do-it-yourself spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. They often have 3D printers, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools, and more – and we are going to have a pop up one for the day here at the Norfolk Hub. Join us on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon for Pop Up Makerspace.

 

Pianist Hilda Huang Returns to Norfolk

Mark your calendars now for Saturday, January 19, at 4 p.m.. when pianist extraordinaire Hilda Huang of the Yale School of Music and former fellow of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, will perform at the Norfolk Library. If you heard her play at the Music Shed, you know it will be a performance you will not forget. Hilda won first prize in the 2014 Leipzig International Bach Competition. Her performances of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven have been hailed for achieving “philosophical depths” and for possessing an “alluring extroversion.” Please call the library 860-542-5075 to reserve a seat for this free concert.
