Kindness in Motion at Northwestern Regional 7

By Michele Sloane

Northwestern Regional School District No. 7 introduced a program called Kindness in Motion five years ago as part of a national movement toward improving the social and emotional health of high school students. This mini-grant program provides students with the opportunity to submit a proposal with an idea for helping others. Students who are awarded the grant receive $100 to use toward their mission to spread kindness. Some students have used the grant as seed money to raise thousands of dollars toward their causes.

The students take great pride in their projects to contribute to those less fortunate. They initiate and complete their own plan, giving them the opportunity to exhibit their leadership, social, and emotional skills.

Over the years, the projects have touched the lives of people across the globe. Mostly, though, the students devote time to making lives better a little closer to home by donating their time and money to area hospitals and other worthy causes.
