Norfolk Downs Easement

The Norfolk Land Trust recently preserved more than 38 acres of prime forestland that abuts Tobey Pond.  The Norfolk Downs easement was finalized late last year, the culmination of several months of work by land trust members, Great Mountain Forest and the landowner, Betsy Gill.

The easement is boarded on two sides by Great Mountain Forest, and it borders a parcel that includes the historic Norfolk Downs Shelter. In fact, the parcel itself is where some of the old Downs golf holes were located. The latest easement is part of about 60 acres of preserved land that will offer permanent protection to Tobey Pond.

“The Norfolk Land Trust is pleased to help keep Tobey Pond pristine and unspoiled,” NLT president Libby Borden said. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, key points on the pond—including next to the public beach—will never be built on. We hope to help keep Tobey Pond a place of beauty and tranquillity for current and future generations of Norfolkians.”
