Laura Gill Photographs on Display at Norfolk Library
Laura Gill is a writer and photographer from Norfolk whose work is embedded in narratives, both linear and fragmented, straightforward and skewed. The first photograph she remembers taking (and liking) was of a vine growing up and around a stop sign on Maple Avenue in Norfolk. She still sees this vine in much of her current work, where she focuses on the relationship between nature and the structures we build to contain it, or let it in, as the case may be. Please join us for the opening reception for the artist on Sunday, May 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by the Library Associates.
Birding By Ear
Once again join expert birders Fran Zygmont on Saturday, May 4 and Bob Barbieri on Saturday, May 11 for birding adventures. In these workshops you will learn to distinguish a variety of both breeding and migrant bird species by song and call. Though the programs focus on birding by ear, spring is a good time to see birds as well, before trees and shrubs fully leaf-out. Visual characteristics and behavior useful in identification will also be discussed. Meet at Aton Forest, 270 North Colebrook Road in Norfolk at 8 a.m. Tuition is $15 per person. Go to www.atonforest.orgto register for one or both dates. Programs limited to 16 participants each day.
