Selectman’s Corner May 2019
By Matt Riiska
Baseball season is coming up and I wanted to remind everyone that there will be a lot of activity on Mountain Road. We will be placing No Parking signs across from the ball field. Please let everyone know that they are there for a good reason – to keep our kids safe. They will only be up until the end of June when the season is over. If you see anyone from an out-of-town team at the ballfield, please let them know why they are there. Last year it was a constant battle to keep them up. We are hoping that by letting everyone know early we will have no issues.
We have started our road maintenance program. With a little luck from mother nature, we will have chip sealed Goshen East Street, Smith Road, Estey Road, Lovers Lane, Bald Mountain Road and part of Doolittle Drive by the time this edition of Norfolk Now is released. We also have plans to do additional chip sealing in the fall. Paving projects will be starting in June.
As many of you know, the stone bridge on Mountain Road is scheduled to be replaced in the summer of 2020. We have started some of the preliminary engineering work so we can apply for state funding. We are currently working with the CT DOT for signage to be posted on Route 272 to inform drivers that vehicles are limited to 14 tons on Mountain Road. The Norfolk Public Works Department will also be setting up barriers on the bridge to limit traffic to one lane. This should not be an issue since most do this now. Also many have asked what the new bridge will look like. We will do everything we can to use as much of the original stone and maintain the original look as we can. We will include local residents in the review of the design when available.
The Annual Town Meeting is set for Monday, May 13at 7 p.m. at Botelle School. See you there.
