Eve V. Thew (1927-2020)
Eve Thew died on Feb. 3 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. She was 92 and had been married to her husband, John Thew, for nearly 69 years.
The daughter of Edward Van de Water and Eve Jacoby, Eve was born in New York City on March 14, 1927, but moved with her parents to Westport, Conn., in the early 1930s. She graduated from William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., where she majored in languages, and became a schoolteacher.
According to family lore, Eve Thew met her future husband, a native of Norwalk, when they were both still children and John had come to the Westport docks to go fishing. They married in 1951, settling in Westport, but moved to Norfolk in 1969, where Eve partnered in John’s business of designing and producing weathervanes, before turning in recent years to the production of her own fabric-based designs.
Eve was an early and enthusiastic participant in the Artisans Guild, according to cofounder Nancy Herzig. “Eve was known all over town for her soft-sculpture dolls,” said Herzig. “She made clothing for them and specific things to carry, like gardening tools, or a book. They had a lot of personality.”
Eve was a member of the Isabellas, and over the years she held many positions of responsibility in the Congregational Church, where she was a deacon. “She was extremely forward-thinking,” said Herzig, “and accepting of all.”
She is survived by John, daughter Ann, son Robert, two nieces and a nephew.
A memorial service was held at the Church of Christ Congregational, Norfolk, on Feb. 8. Donations may be made to Norfolk Volunteer Ambulance, P.O. Box 399, Norfolk, CT 06058; and to the Church of Christ, specifically the Steeple Fund, P.O. Box 582, Norfolk, CT 06058.
