Norfolk Land Trust Sponsors Bird-Watching Walk at Haystack State Park
Join the Norfolk Land Trust on an early morning excursion at Haystack State Park to look for Spring birds at 7 a.m. on Sat., April 25. Experienced birder Susannah Wood will lead the group on a walk through the park. Meet at the entrance to the park on Route 272 North. Please wear walking shoes, bring binoculars and dress appropriately — it is tick season.
Scholarships Available to Norfolk Students
Scholarships are available to graduating high school students from the Norfolk Connecticut Children’s Foundation. The application is available on line at norfolkchildren.com, and must be submitted by Apr. 20. Graduating students taking a gap year or not matriculating directly to college or a technical program may defer their award for up to three years from graduation. Completed scholarship applications can be sent by email to: info@norfolkchildren.com or by regular mail to: NCCF, PO Box 322, Norfolk, CT 06058. This is a one-time only award restricted to full time Norfolk residents. Questions can be directed to any board member.
Access Health CT Special Enrollment Period
Due to the coronavirus issues, Access Health CT has been authorized to offer a new special enrollment period from Mar. 19 to Apr. 2 for uninsured residents. Access Health CT is the state’s official health insurance marketplace where individuals and small businesses can enroll in health insurance coverage, and the only place where people can qualify for financial help to lower costs. Norfolk DTC to Screen Documentary on 1960 Democratic Primary
The Norfolk Democratic Town Committee will host a special showing of filmmaker Robert Drew’s “Primary”, an intimate look inside the primary race between Democratic front runners Hubert Humphrey and John F. Kennedy. The 60-minute documentary, which is part of the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, will be shown at 4 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 26 at The Mill building, 32 Shepard Road (at the intersections of Shepard and John Curtiss roads). Seating is limited, so please arrive early. There will be a suggested donation of $10. The Washington Post recently ranked the film fourth on its list of the best political movies ever made.
Norfolk’s Church of Christ Offers On-Line Worship Opportunities
With Sunday worship services suspended, Church of Christ, Norfolk, is posting online worship videos on Facebook on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. The videos, which are created new each week, feature inspiring music, Scripture, prayers, a meditation, and images from around the northwest corner of Connecticut. In addition, Wednesday night Bible study is taking place through Zoom, as are Pastor Erick’s Thursday morning “Offee” Hour from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Anyone who would like to participate in Bible study or “Offee” Hour, should contact the church office at office@cofcucc.org or 806-542-5721 to receive a Zoom link.
Free Meals for Children Through EdAvance
EdAdvance Food Service is working in collaboration with Region 7, Torrington and Winchester Public Schools to offer meals for students during school shutdown. Meals will be provided at two locations in the area, Vogel-Wetmore School located at 68 Church Street in Torrington and Pearson Middle School located at 2 Wetmore Avenue in Winsted starting today.
Meals will be provided in a drive-thru fashion at both sites, Monday thru Friday 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Any child 18 or under will be provided a Grab and Go bag lunch for that day and a breakfast for the next morning. Presidential Primary Postponed to June 2.
Connecticut’s presidential primary has been postponed until June 2. Governor Lamont’s executive order 7G says “Under my sole authority pursuant to the declaration of public health and civil preparedness emergency, and to protect the health and safety of voters, poll workers, and the most vulnerable members of our population, I hereby modify Section 9-464 of the Connecticut General Statutes to provide that on June 2, 2020 each party shall conduct a primary in each town if the names of two or more candidates for President of the United States are to be placed on such party’s ballot in accordance with the provisions of chapter 154 of the General Statutes.” Contact Norfolk Registrars of Voters, Phylis Bernard (R) or Danese Perrone (D) at 860-542-5134 for more information or to register.
