Mary O’Dwyer Welz (1924-2020)
Mary O’Dwyer Welz died Saturday, February 22, 2020 at her home, surrounded by family.
She was born Mary J. O’Dwyer on Sept. 21, 1924, the daughter of the late Margaret (Bowe) O’Dwyer and Henry Patrick O’Dwyer and lived in Norfolk, CT until her retirement, after which she moved to Winsted.
Mary graduated from The Gilbert School and worked for many years in the offices of Norfolk Center School and The Botelle School, and was the administrative assistant to the Norfolk selectmen until her retirement in 1992. She served the Town of Norfolk as treasurer and was active on the Board of Finance and the Democratic Town Committee
After her retirement Mary enjoyed traveling, knitting, spending time with her grandchildren and adventures with her daughters. She was a communicant at the Immaculate Conception Church in Norfolk and later at St. Joseph’s in Winsted.
She is survived by her beloved five daughters, Ann Ayers, Elizabeth Welz, Janet Welz-Kavanagh and her husband Adrian, Karen Welz, and Susan Fracasso and her husband Kenneth; seven grandchildren, Dulcie Ayers Davis, Eric Ayers, Colleen Kavanagh, Dillon Kavanagh, Jared Romaniello, Sara Fracasso, and Michael Fracasso; and eight great-grandchildren. Mary is predeceased by her brother, Joseph and son-in-law, Gregory Ayers.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Church, Norfolk. Burial will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norfolk.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
