A Grave Affair at the Library on All Saints’ Day

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” on Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. with storyteller Linda Schuyler Ford, featuring the works of Washington Irving and fascinating facts about the beloved author. Find yourself utterly immersed in the world of Ichabod Crane, and his dreaded encounter with the mystical Headless Horseman! This virtual program takes place via Zoom, and you must register in advance on the library website to receive a Zoom link, or call 860-542-5075.

The Norfolk Library Food Explorers 

Join Katie, a registered dietitian from Food Explorers, to make a variety of sweet and savory treats. On Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m., children will learn how to mix, knead, roll and cut their own fettuccine without needing a pasta machine. This virtual program is family friendly. On Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m., Katie will do a pasta program for adults, featuring homemade ravioli. Land Trust Plans Trail Work Day

Volunteers are needed to help the Norfolk Land Trust clean up our trails after a summer of heavy use and strong storms. If you’d like to help, please meet outside the Hub on Station Place on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. Wear waterproof shoes and bring work gloves. Work sessions will end around 3 p.m. We plan to social distance, so please bring a mask along. If you plan to attend, help us get a head count by contacting Bill Couch at billcouch1@mac.com. 

Christopher Beha in Conversation with Courtney Maum

Christopher Beha, author of “The Index of Self-Destructive Acts,” a National Book Award nominee, will speak with local author Courtney Maum in this Norfolk Library virtual program on Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. Beha is the author of a memoir, “The Whole Five Feet,” and the novels “Arts & Entertainments” and “What Happened to Sophie Wilder. He is also the editor of Harper’s Magazine. Maum is the author of the several novels, including “Touch” (a New York Times Editor’s Choice and NPR Best Book of the Year selection), the popular guidebook “Before and After the Book Deal” and the forthcoming memoir, “The Year of the Horses.” Please register on the library website to get the Zoom link, or call 860-542-5075. 

Tapping into Taverns

Taverns in early Connecticut were more than just a place to drink. Travelers and locals alike saw taverns as a place to be entertained, spread news and gossip, have a good meal and get a night’s lodging. Learn about how taverns were an essential part of every Connecticut town in this virtual presentation for the Norfolk Library on Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. You must register in advance to receive a Zoom link.

Food Drive at National Iron Bank

The Norfolk branch of National Iron Bank is holding a food drive on Nov. 16. Please bring nonperishable food items to the bank from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food will be distributed to the Norfolk Food Pantry and to pantries in surrounding towns.

Small Acts of Art: Creating Mobiles 

Using collage and other craft techniques, children will make eco-friendly mobiles inspired by the people who have brought joy, beauty and wisdom to their lives. Once complete, their artwork will be ready to give to that special person as a token of gratitude just in time for Thanksgiving. This virtual program on Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m. is for children in grades 2-4 and is limited to 15 participants. Please register on the library website to get the Zoom link, or call 860-542-5075.

Black Friday Hike

Norfolk Land Trust’s annual Black Friday “skip the shopping” and “hike without stopping” walk up Pine Mountain will be at 1 p.m. on Nov. 27. Meet outside the trailhead off of Grantville Road. The hike is at least an hour and can be steep in some spots. It also can be wet, so please be prepared. We hope to see you there and please bring a mask.
