Picnic on the Green
Join the Norfolk Foundation on the village green for burgers, hotdogs, ice cream and music by Grant Mudge on Friday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate the end of summer and the successful “Fridays on the Green” series. Bring Your Own Chair.
Gil Eisner Exhibit at the Norfolk Library
Paintings, drawings and sculpture by Gil Eisner will be on display for the month of September at the Norfolk Library. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Sunday, Sept. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from sales benefits the Norfolk Library Associates and the many free library programs they fund.
Virtual Studio Tour with Fox Hysen
Norfolk resident Fox Hysen will discuss her current work in a virtual studio tour for the Norfolk Library on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 5:30 p.m. A native of San Rafael, California, Hysen received a BFA from NYU and MFA from Yale University. Her visually diverse practice oscillates between drawing, printmaking and painting, and she has been part of numerous group shows nationally and abroad. Bruce Frisch: A Retrospective Photography Exhibit
The Norfolk Hub invites all to an opening reception on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. showcasing photographs from Bruce Frisch’s archives. A photo slideshow of “Rise of the World Trade Center” showing Frisch’s World Trade Center photographs can also be viewed during the reception and by request during the Hub’s regular operating hours. The exhibit will remain on display for the months of September and October.
No Ordinary Walk in the Woods
Join forester Star Childs on a walk through the Norfolk Land Trust’s Barbour Woods at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 as part of the Housatonic Heritage Walks. The talk will highlight the natural surroundings and illuminate what sort of activities occurred to shape the forest. The hike will last about one hour and cover roughly one mile. Meet at the Barbour Woods trailhead at 75 Lovers Lane.
Where the Bears Are
On Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 7 to 8 p.m., Norfolk Hub Talks presents “Coexisting with Wildlife; Black bears in Connecticut: When, where, and how many?”, a virtual webinar with Prof. Tracy Rittenhouse and wildlife ecologist Laura Simon, sponsored by the Norfolk Conservation Commission. The talk focuses on a multi-year research project studying Connecticut’s black bear population and looks at sources of and solutions to local bear-human conflicts. Around the World in 80 Gardens
Dr. Richard W. Benfield, Emeritus Professor of Geography at Central Connecticut State University and author of “Garden Tourism”, will give a virtual slide talk featuring 80 of the world’s great gardens on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 5:30 p.m. for the Norfolk Library. From the arid gardens of Australia to lush English country gardens and amazing plots across the U.S. and Canada, Benfield showcases the unique gardens and floral kingdoms of the world. Notice of Public Hearing on CIPA
The Norfolk Library will discuss the implementation of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) filtering on all the library’s computers and internet connections at a public Zoom meeting on Monday, Sept. 27, at 5:30 p.m. CIPA compliance is required for libraries to be eligible for federal funding for internet related services and technology. Affordable Housing Plan Forum
Presented and sponsored by the Norfolk Housing Plan Steering Committee on Monday, Sept. 27, from 5 to 6 p.m., Norfolk Hub Talks invites the community to hear about the specific goals and strategies being proposed to address Norfolk’s housing needs in the town’s draft Affordable Housing Plan. Women’s Adventure Club
If you are physically active, enjoy learning new skills, seek adventure and identify as a woman, then you’re welcome to join the newly formed Women’s Adventure Club in Norfolk! The club meets the third Saturday of each month, starting Sept. 18. Tentative adventures include paddleboarding and zipline. Land Trust Trail Race
The Norfolk Land Trust’s annual Haystack Mountain Challenge will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, with the start and finish at the Barbour Woods trailhead on Lovers Lane. The event will include a half-marathon that starts at 9 a.m.; a 10k trail race at 10:45 a.m.; and a 5K race at 11 a.m. Runners must register in advance at ultrasignup.com. Tour de Forest Returns
Bike Norfolk on Saturday, Oct. 9 and support the Norfolk Rails to Trails. The 13-mile route is a fun ride on a mix of dirt and paved roads up Mountain Road and through Great Mountain Forest.
