Board of Selectmen Meeting

Eye on Town Government

In their only official business at their Oct. 6 meeting, the Board of Selectmen voted to appoint Sandy Evans to the Norfolk Cemetery Committee. The other members of the committee are the first selectman, Matt Riiska, Phylis Bernard, Stan Civco and JoAnn Gundlach.

The Cemetery Committee oversees the town’s three municipal cemeteries: Grantville, Pond Town and South Norfolk. All the other cemeteries in town are privately run. The main tasks of the committee are to oversee general maintenance and create rules and regulations for the town cemeteries.

Before the pandemic, the town had started mapping the cemeteries with ground-penetrating radar to locate and identify gravesites. Town clerk Linda Perkins is working to determine names of all the individuals buried in Pond Town, the smallest and oldest of the three cemeteries. Recently a group of volunteers, organized by John Moran as his Eagle Scout project, located the graves of all the veterans buried in the town’s cemeteries and marked them with flag holders.

The Cemetery Committee is hoping to meet in the next few weeks and would like to hear from anyone who has information about relatives who are buried in one of the town cemeteries.
