Winter Solstice Lantern Walk
The Norfolk Library will host a Winter Solstice Lantern Walk on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 4:15 p.m. A family lantern-making workshop will be offered at the library at 3:30 p.m. Just before sunset, the luminaries will be lit (lanterns from home are also welcome) for a walk down to Memorial Green, where Miss Eileen will share holiday stories by lantern light. NHS Cake Auction
Norfolk’s star bakers offer fine confections for the benefit of the Norfolk Historical Society on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m. at the NHS, 13 Village Green. Masks required. 

Wreath-Making with GMF

Norfolk Hub Presents “Convergence” 
The opening reception for the latest exhibit by members of Norfolk Artists & Friends will be on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Hub, 2 Station Place. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibit runs through Jan. 4.

Tom Hlas Exhibit
In an exhibit entitled “Potpourri,” the recent work of Tom Hlas will be on display at the Norfolk Library for the month of December. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by the Library Associates.

A Look Inside a Christmas Classic
A screening of Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” will be held at the Norfolk Library on Monday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. It will also be broadcast on NBC on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. Then, join in virtually on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 4 p.m. for Brian Rose, professor emeritus at Fordham University, speaking on the fascinating story of the film, the challenges of how it was made and how it became the ultimate portrayal of holiday cheer. Sharing Holiday Traditions

“Down With the King” at BIFF
The Berkshire International Film Festival is showing “Down With the King,” directed by Norfolk’s Diego Ongaro, at the Mahaiwe in Great Barrington on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. Q&A with the director, cast and crew will follow. Tickets at biffma.org. 

Connecticut’s Aviation History
For the anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first flight, learn about the many Connecticut accomplishments that helped pioneer early flight and eventually provided the global aviation community with critical technologies. Music for Marimba at the Library
The Norfolk Library will host a holiday open house on Thursday, Dec. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. Relax and rejuvenate while listening to the music of Andrew Thomson on marimba. Thomson, founder of Pipeman Studios in Norfolk, has earned an international reputation as a composer, performer and educator.

ASL Basics for Beginners, Part 1
The Norfolk Library will offer ASL Basics for Beginners on Jan. 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 7 to 7:45 p.m. via Zoom. A live sign language instructor will teach how to sign the ASL manual alphabet, greetings, basic phrases and more. Participants should attend all four Tuesday sessions. Norfolk Hub Presents Soil From Trash
Michael Simpson has an international reputation; his specialty is composting and climate change and he led a team that invented municipal recycling. His online talk, co-sponsored by the Missions and Social Justice/Green Group at UCC and the Norfolk Conservation Commission, will explore what towns and citizens can do to reduce municipal waste. Jefferson and Slavery at Monticello
The 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery was ratified on Dec. 6, 1865. To mark this milestone, Dianne Pierce, guide at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, will discuss Jefferson’s complicated relationship to issues of slavery and race and will tell some of the individual stories of those enslaved at Monticello in a virtual slide talk on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 5:30 p.m. To register, please visit norfolklibrary.org or call 860-542-5075.

Dive Into the Goldberg Variations
The Goldberg Variations are one of Bach’s mature works, a full statement of his musical art and theory in a compact but incredibly emotional package. Immerse yourself in some of the finest keyboard music ever written in a six-week Zoom series with pianist Anchie Donn and lecturer Mark Scarbrough. Battell Arts Foundation Scholarships
Because of the pandemic, the Battell Arts Foundation has altered its scholarship calendar to offer more opportunities to area children. Scholarships are awarded to young artists to help pay for their education, and funds can be used for activities such as individual lessons, workshops and other organized programs. Applicants must be residents of Colebrook or Norfolk and in grades 3-12. Email kimcrone@sbcglobal.net for an application; submission deadline is Monday, Dec. 13, with awards to be made in January 2022.
