Covid-19 Outbreak at Geer Nursing Home
The Hartford Courant has reported that at least eight residents at the nursing home at Geer Village Senior Community in North Canaan have died of Covid-19 during an outbreak of the virus at the facility over the last eight weeks.
According to Geer, 89 people were infected during October, including 67 residents and 22 staff. Eight of the residents died of Covid-19 and 56 fully recovered. All 22 staff members recovered. Kevin O’Connell, chief executive officer, said in a statement that the residents who died had “serious underlying health issues.” He also noted that the outbreak did not impact Geer Lodge, the adjacent assisted living facility.
The outbreak became national news in November, with reports that although nearly everyone at the facility was vaccinated, they had not yet been able to receive boosters when the outbreak occurred. Connecticut public health officials have since said that they aim to ensure that all state nursing homes receive boosters by mid-December, as vaccine immunity to the virus has begun to wane in some of the state’s most vulnerable residents.
In a notification on its website, Geer said that its staff is 99 percent vaccinated and all employees are masking and “practicing heightened infection control procedures.” The facility continues to test its residents and staff for Covid-19 biweekly.
