Program to Support Ukraine
Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, many have been searching for ways to express solidarity with the Ukrainian people, donating to aid organizations and keeping up with the news. One way to honor the extraordinary spirit of the Ukrainians is by honoring its rich literary culture. Ilya Kaminsky, a Ukrainian American poet born in Odessa, recently wrote an op-ed in which he described asking friends there how he could help. One, a seasoned journalist, answered, “Putins come and go. If you want to help, send us some poems and essays. We are putting together a literary magazine.”
While to Americans this conflict seems like a fresh assault, Ukraine has really been at war ever since 2014, when Russia first attacked the eastern territories. Two anthologies, “Words for War” and “What We Live For, What We Die For,” make available some of the best poets and strongest writing to come out this ongoing conflict. Please join us to read their words and hear their voices on Sunday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. via Zoom. To register for this webinar, go to norfolklibrary.org or call 860-542-5075.
