Art Exhibit at the Library: Caryn King

Floral still life paintings by Southfield, Mass., resident Caryn King will be on display at the Norfolk Library through the month of February. King’s paintings range from realism to the layered brushwork and inventiveness of expressionism.

Sock Monkey Circus

Celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day on Saturday, Feb. 4. Goodhearted Puppets will present Sock Monkey Circus at the Norfolk Library at 1 p.m. Professional puppeteer, clown and magician Honey Goodenough will delight audiences young and old. Black History: Book Talk

On Monday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., the Norfolk Library will host a book discussion of Aja Barber’s “Consumed: The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change and Consumerism.” Barber exposes the endemic injustices of consumer industries and the uncomfortable history of the textile industry’s role in slavery, racism and wealth inequality. This is presented in partnership with the Norfolk Church of Christ. The first 10 registrants at norfolklibrary.org or 860-542-5075 will receive a free copy of the book.

Black History: Documentary Film

The documentary film “A Woman on the Outside” will be shown at the library on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m., followed by a discussion with director Lisa Riordan Seville. Kristal is a young, ambitious Philadelphian driven to keep families connected to their incarcerated loved ones. Historic Main Streets Presentation

On Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m., William Hosley will deliver the slide presentation “Connecticut’s Main Streets” at the Norfolk Library. The program is presented by the Norfolk Historical Society as part of its annual meeting and in conjunction with its exhibition “Main Street: A Look Back 100 Years.” All are welcome.

Inspired by Nature

On Tuesday, Feb.14, at the Norfolk Library, the Isabella Players welcome all to enjoy a selection of poems, songs and choreography, old and new, inspired by the natural world. Refreshments at 3:30 p.m.; the performance begins at 4 p.m. The players are members of the Isabella Eldridge Club, established in 1912 to honor the founder of the library.

Home First Aid for Pets

Sambaland Brings Carnival to Norfolk

Authentic Brazilian music comes to the Norfolk Library on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. The Berkshire Bateria, part of the musical collective Sambaland, founded in 1994 by Teri and Jim Weber, will perform hot samba rhythms on traditional Brazilian percussive instruments. The Great Backyard Bird Count

The Norfolk Library and the Norfolk Land Trust invite you on a backyard bird count at City Meadow led by expert birder Ayreslea Denny on Saturday, Feb. 18. Meet at Robertson Plaza at 9 a.m. for bird spotting then head to the library to enter the count data into the eBird citizen science database. Weather permitting. Bring binoculars and dress for winter walking.

Home Safety and Fall Prevention

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, safety at home is the focus at the Norfolk Hub. Liz Cornish of New Season in Life: Senior and Memory Care Consultants will addresse fall risks and offers solutions to help people age safely at home. Tara Yard of Norfolk Social Services will present on services for seniors and a Norfolk Lion’s Club Ambulance volunteer will explain their services and experiences with at-home falls. WIN Weekend is Back

Two Plays Premiere at Norfolk Library

Two one-act plays, written and directed by Norfolk residents and cast with local actors, will premiere at the Norfolk Library on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. “Let’s Play” by Marinell Crippen, set in the early 1970s, is about young girls’ friendships as they navigate difficult situations. These kids are funny, honest, playful and sometimes tough. “Barren” by Sara Heller is the story of one woman’s choice to be a surrogate. It reflects on her complicated relationship with her own mother and how the relationships brought forth by the surrogacy changed her life forever. Visit norfolklibrary.org to register.
