Clarification on Harvesting Ramps
The portion of the article on wild edibles needs some clarification about ramp harvesting (“In Search of Wild Edibles,” Norfolk Now, May 2023). While not advocated in the article it should be made very clear that you do not harvest ramp bulbs.
The bulbs take many years to mature, and digging one up is destroying a native plant. Pulling leaves is not a great harvesting technique because it is too imprecise and rough. Cut only one leaf per plant, as they only have two leaves, using a knife or scissor, and do it sparingly in any one area.
