Raising the Steeple
The Raise the Steeple Committee of the Church of Christ Congregational is delighted to announce that we have been awarded, and the church voted to accept, a $200,000 grant for the project by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The community of Norfolk has shown tremendous support of this project and with these additional funds we will be able to restore the steeple and maintain it for years to come.
The acceptance of this steeple grant provides the church with access to a team of historical preservation experts who will guide us through any capital projects and make sure that our building is properly maintained and preserved. The clock face and chimes restoration work are already underway. Lightning rods will be replaced and soon the bid documents will be sent out to SHPO’s approved contractors for restoring and replacing the steeple.
We are working with GNCB, an architectural/engineering consulting firm from Old Saybrook, Conn., who will oversee the whole project. GNCB was chosen by the steeple committee for their extensive experience in steeple restoration. We are grateful to the community who has shown their support of this campaign that will make it possible for the church to restore the steeple to its former glory overlooking Village Green.
In gratitude from the Raise the Steeple Committee,
Marie Civco, Hope Childs, Betsy Gill, Jan Graham-Jones, Kate Johnson, Erick Olsen and Rowland Denny
