Selectman’s Corner
Volunteers Needed
By Matt Riiska
I have mentioned this before on a few occasions, but here we go again. We need volunteers to fill positions on many of our boards, commissions and committees, not to mention our ambulance and fire departments. We are currently looking for new members for the Inland Wetlands Agency and the Planning and Zoning Commission. If Norfolk wants to maintain the quality of life that we have, we need to get more people involved. With an aging demographic we need more young people to get involved.
Another organization needing members is our Lions Club. Established in 1952, the Lions Club is not a social organization that just meets once a month to chat. The Lions Club has been the organization that since its founding has sponsored the Norfolk Lions Club Ambulance, which has been providing this service free of charge for 72 years. This is one of the few ambulance services in Connecticut still operating free of charge. Not only do members of the Lions Club work to support the ambulance, but they also work with the Red Cross on blood drives, collect eyeglasses and support vision services for our local schoolchildren and children and others in need around the world, provide scholarships for our students and support the food pantry, as well as many other activities.
So, if you have even one night a month, please contact the Norfolk Selectmen’s Office and we will get you involved. My dad always told me that if you are not going to volunteer and do something to help, then do not complain. Be part of the community. You will be rewarded with meeting some great people, and you will feel like you participated, although you are guaranteed the right to complain. Thanks.
I would provide an update on all the projects going on, but we all know of the disruptions, detours, and let us not forget the dust. Thank you for your patience.
Take care and stay healthy.
