Lining Up Summer Projects

By Matt Riiska

Summer is here and with that we have a number of projects to take care of.

Good news, we have received approval from the CT-DEEP and the Army Core of Engineers to install the temporary bridge at Smith Road. This is great news. I want to thank the residents of Smith Road and Old Goshen Road for their patience during this long and challenging process. The work on the bridge will start in the next week or so. The next step in this process will be the construction of the Old Goshen Road bridge which will not start until late summer 2026. The permanent bridge at Smith Road will follow.
Aquarion will be starting the process of installing new water mains on Westside Road and Shepard Road. I am unsure when this will start, but there will be an update on these projects when more information is available.

Our Public Works Department will be starting on the milling and chip sealing portions of Doolittle Drive. The town crew has been clearing up the sides of Doolittle Drive to remove stumps that were close to the roads, providing proper damage. As part of this project our Conservation Commission has instructed the crew to reseed the sides of the road with a conservation/wildlife mix. The milling, sealing, and reseeding will occur in August, with a second coat of sealing in October.

Although there are a lot of projects going on, there are a number of fun activities scheduled for this summer, with the biggest being the 10th anniversary of WIN Weekend, Aug. 1, 2 and 3. I am sure Sue Frisch and her band of volunteers will have a great schedule of events. Friday Nights on the Green are back starting on June 6 and continuing through Aug. 29. For more events keep an eye on the town website.

Have a great summer and please slow down and enjoy everything Norfolk has to offer.
