A Bad Month for Invasives

Norfolk contractor Phillip Lovett volunteered a day of his time and equipment to clear a steep bank at Botelle Elementary School infested with a tangle of bittersweet, porcelain berry, Japanese honeysuckle and multiflora rose—among other invasive plants. It was part of the Conservation Commission’s all-out effort to tame invasives across Norfolk. A team from Native Habitat Restoration, the Stockbridge, Mass., company that has also worked in City Meadow, sprayed patches of mugwort at the town garage, a large stand of knotweed at Center Cemetery and other areas in town, including the Haystack Woods affordable housing community and Blackberry Street. Commission member Becky Eaton said a team of volunteers returned to Botelle on Sunday, Oct. 19, to tackle areas Lovett could not reach with his machine. She noted that it would take some time for the efforts to become visible. The work was supported through the commission budget, as well as property owners.
