City Meadow Sets a Deadline

The Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) in 2027 will mark the 125th anniversary of its founding and the Friends of the Meadow decided at their October meeting to adopt that milestone for achieving many major goals. “We want have [City Meadow] look as good as possible in two years,” said Co-chair Libby Borden. “What do we need to do?”

As it turns out, the list is long despite significant work over the past two years to control invasive species such as phragmites and mugwort, plant native species and encourage healthy growth. As Borden noted, the waving stalks of dead plants—mostly invasive cattails and phragmites—create an unkempt look. Others noted that progress has been slower than expected, and Borden said the group can expect a simplified planting plan in the new year.

The committee, working with a list started by Borden and Co-chair George Cronin, came up with a healthy set of priorities. These include explanatory signage, repairs to the boardwalk, a consultation with the Inland Wetlands Agency about dredging the pond, stacking dead wood, eliminating dead vegetation, eradication of invasives on the hillsides and raising more funds. The committee also planned to continue collaborating with the NVFD, represented at the meeting by Steve Hutchins, to coordinate landscaping work associated with construction of the new fire house and the potential for a controlled burn.

For those who plan ahead, save the date of Aug. 27, 2027, for a day of festivities in and around the firehouse, Station Place and City Meadow. Hutchins said there will be live music, food trucks and activities for all ages.
